The demand for “highly compressed” versions of major video game titles, particularly Microsoft’s Halo 2 (2004), represents a unique intersection of software piracy, data preservation, and bandwidth limitations in the early 2000s. This paper examines the technical methods used to compress a 4.7 GB DVD-ROM game into files as small as 50–200 MB, the lossy and lossless techniques involved, and the socio-economic factors driving users to seek these versions.
